President Buhari over-rules Minister of Power, reinstates NBET MD
The Power Sector has of recent become the theatre of chess games! The latest move is that of President Buhari reversing the moves of the Minister of Power, Engr Sale Mamman.
The Minister of Power had in the wee hours of December 2019 technically “sacked” the Managing Director of the Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trader, NBET as well as suspend the Managing Director of Rural Electrification Agency, REA, in one fell swoop in a tweet.
According to the tweet on the Ministry’s twitter handle and signed by the Special Assistant to the Minister on Media, Aaron Artimas, the two MDs were relieved of the posts following identified infractions in the operations of their respective agencies.
According to industry watchers, the move by the Minister of Power was received with mis-giving; some had even commended the technical sack of NBET MD as over-due, while others had wondered the possibility of suspending the MD of REA who had tendered her letter of resignation three months earlier to join a United Nations’ agency.
Only yesterday, the President of the Federation played the jocker by reversing the move of the Minister. He recalled and re-instated the MD of NBET, Dr Marilyn Amobi to her position, status quo ante. It would be recalled that a few days earlier, the President had also reversed the Minister on the suspension of the MD of REA, Mrs Damilola Ogunbiyi which was converted to resignation to enable her take up the job at the UN agency.
The industry experts believe that the power sector is being managed inappropriately, giving such mix ups at the very high level. A few days ago, the issue of tariff increase was the talk of the town, with denials from NERC as to when or if at all, the new tariff increase will ever be operationalized.
Energy experts have called for synergy and team spiritedness, devoid of unreasonable competition and envy, among the operators, managers and administrators of agencies in the Power Sector in order to situate the sector on the trajectory to provide quality electricity services to the people.
