NERC Directs System Operator to Prioritize Dispatching all Hydro Power Stations to check flooding
The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC, has directed the System Operator to prioritize the dispatching of power generated by the three hydro power stations in Nigeria in order to manage effectively the water inflow into the dams.
The order is also meant to check the result of flooding that might occur if there is an eventual spill or over flow of accumulated water in their reservoirs.
It would be recalled that the Nigerian Meteorological Agency in her 2019 Forecast declared the likelihood of massive flood following increased rainfall in the communities along the upper River Niger especially in Niger Republic and disastrous consequences if preventive measures are not put in place in Nigeria to assuage the effects.
With this NERC Order, the System Operator has to adjust the dispatching process to be able to take up all the power generated by the three hydro power stations in Nigeria- Kanji, Jebba and Shiroro before calling in power from the thermal power stations.
