One of the nation’s three hydropower plants, Shiroro Power Station located in Niger State, has been shut down as a result of flood challenge. Shiroro Power Plant, which is capable of generating 428 megawatts, was shut down “due to turbine pit flood problem.”

Data obtained from the Federal Ministry of Power, Works and Housing showed that the plant had been idle since February 20.

While generation output from hydropower plants makes up 30 per cent of the total national generation, the balance of 70% comes from thermal plants.

The three hydro power plants- Kainji, Jebba and Shiroro- located in Niger State have been in the news in recent times as the youths in the state complained of poor power supply in spite of hosting the power stations. They even threatened to shut down the power stations if the power supply situation to them in the state being served by Abuja Electricity Distribution Company, AEDC, does not improve.
